Afternoon tea is a tradition that began in 1840 by Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford. Due to the long period between breakfast usually consisting of ale, bread, and beef, and a long, massive dinner eaten at the end of the day, usually around 8 o'clock, the duchess expressed an empty, “sinking” feeling that afflicted her between 3 O’clock and 4 O’clock. One afternoon she requested a tray of tea, bread and butter, and cake to be brought to her room. Gradually she became accustomed to this habit and invited her friends to partake in her daily tea-time ritual at five o'clock in her rooms at Woburn Abbey. Within a short period of time the affair known as afternoon tea became an elaborate social event. Mrs. Newberry is a proud mother and the consummate party hostess. She has been in the service industry for 23 years. Mrs. Newberry has a natural affinity for entertaining and bringing a smile to all of her guests.
